48 Hours in Lindisfarne


Friday, 10am Head down the A1 to the Lindisfarne Inn. 

2pm Enjoy a chauffeur-driven wildlife tour, discovering the area's stunning scenery, as well as birds and animals. Finish up with a scamper along Bamburgh beach at sunset (tel: 01670 827465, www.northernexperiencewildlife tours.co.uk). 

6pm Chow down on good pub grub, including loads of choice on the daily specials board.

10pm A nightcap in front of the log fire, warm welcome guaranteed. 

Saturday, 9am Breakfast. Self-service cereals and juice, and a cooked breakfast to set you up for the day.

10.50am Time and tide wait for no man. Check the noticeboards for crossing times if you don't want to be rescued. 

11am Blast away the cobwebs with a bracing stroll around the island. Lindisfarne Castle is worth a look – open or not. 

Noon Take a leisurely lunch at The Ship Inn, Marygate, (tel: 01289 389311, www. theshipinn-holyisland.co.uk). You can't leave the island until 4pm, so there's no rush. 

2pm Retreat to the Lindisfarne priory and museum. Learn about the Lindisfarne Gospels, early Christianity, and explore the ruins of monastic buildings (tel: 01289 389200, www.englishheritage.org.uk). 

7pm Tea. The Barn at the Beal showcases the finest local produce (tel: 01289 540044, www.barnatbeal.com), booking advised. 

Sunday, 10am Second helpings of breakfast, or take advantage of guest-reduced charges at Seahouses ocean club (tel: 01665 721600, www.ocean-club. co.uk) and have a dip before leaving.
